Readoactive turns the books you see in videos into a reading list and keeps track of what you read. This page says what the app stores, where that information goes, and how to get rid of it. It is written for readers, not lawyers, and it describes what the app actually does.
What Readoactive stores
- Your Google account's name, email address and picture, and Google's identifier for the account, so you can sign in. We never see your Google password and read nothing else from the account.
- What you put in: books and their status, ratings, reviews, reading progress, tags, lists, followed series, goals and reading dates. A Goodreads or StoryGraph export you import is read for its book rows.
- The welcome email and tips: ten minutes after you join we email you once, with the first steps you have not taken yet. If your shelf is still empty on day 3 and day 10 we send a short tip, at most those two; turn them off with the one-tap link in the tip or under You → Account → Email. A reply to either reaches a person. They are sent through Resend.
- The weekly email: on Sunday evenings we email what came in for you that week (holds ready, your clubs, new books in your series, films of books on your pile), only when there is something to say. Turn it off with the one-tap link at the bottom of any of them, no sign-in needed, or in You → Account → Email.
- Undo: when you change many books at once or remove something (mark as read, remove from your library, delete a list, leave a club...), the rows it changed are kept as they were for ten minutes so the Undo in the message can put them back, then deleted within the hour.
- Quotes and reviews you say or photograph: the recording or the photo of the page is read once (the words by Groq, OpenAI or our own server; the page by Anthropic) and deleted straight away. Only the text you check and save is kept, as a quote on the book or as your review.
- Goals and the streak: private to you. For the streak we keep the dates (only the dates) on which you logged progress, finished a book or used Say what you read, and your time zone, so days are counted as yours. The Sunday-evening nudge after a quiet week is off until you turn it on.
- Reports: if you report a review, quote or idea, we keep the report and that it came from your account until an admin has handled it. Content reported by readers can be removed by us.
- Your name and photo: shown to your friends, the members of your book clubs and, if you turn it on, on your public profile. Google's picture is used until you choose your own; a photo you upload is made small and square and stored with your account.
- Public profile: off until you turn it on under You → Account. Then anyone with its link (readoactive.app/@yourname) sees only the blocks you switch on, until you turn it off; private books and books you did not finish never show.
- Connected reading apps: a reading app you connect (Kindle, Kobo or another) can update your reading status and progress, and see which books you are reading now and how far, until you disconnect it under You → Account; we keep a log of its calls for 90 days.
- Invites: when a new reader joins with your invite link, we keep that you invited them, so you both get the month of Plus, and the device id the app keeps for you, to stop an account inviting itself. Your friend sees your first name and photo on the page the link opens. The link carries a short code, never your email; the code is kept out of our logs.
- Messages to us: what you send us from You → Write to us is stored with your account email so we can reply, and reaches us by email through Resend.
- Friends: if you and another reader add each other, they see your name and picture, what you are reading now, what you finished recently with its rating, and how many books you have; never your notes, your to-read pile or reads you marked private. A book you recommend carries your name and note to that friend. Other readers can find you by your display name to send a request, which only becomes a friendship when you accept.
- Captures: the video or Instagram post link you share, its public caption and page details, a transcript of a video's audio, and a few still frames (a post's pictures instead). The speech is transcribed by Groq or OpenAI when we have them set up (they process the audio and do not keep it), otherwise on our own server. A video, photo, voice recording or export file you upload is used once and deleted as soon as it has been processed, within a day at the latest. When you add a book from a capture, what the creator said about it (tropes, vibes, content warnings, spice) is kept on the book's page for every reader, credited to the creator with the video's link; you are counted among the readers who captured it as a one-way code, never by name.
- Your libraries: the names of the public libraries you pick, so we can check what is available to borrow. Never a library card number. If you pick your US state on More Libraries, we keep that too, to show which cards are free for you.
- Your location, when you tap Use my location on the events page, or when your browser already allows this site to use it and you have no saved place: the position is rounded and turned into a town or city name, only that name is saved, and the position itself is not kept.
- Audible, only if you connect it: you sign in on Amazon's own page, in your browser, and Amazon hands us a device sign-in for your account; we never see your password. We keep that sign-in encrypted and use it for one thing: reading the list of titles in your Audible library, once when you connect and then once a day. Disconnecting removes the device from your Amazon account and deletes the sign-in here; your books stay.
- Notifications: if you turn them on, the address your browser gives us for push messages.
- Visits and sign-in steps: when the front page opens and at each step of signing in (the sign-in page, the email sent, the tap that signs you in), we count the step with the kind of phone (iPhone or Android), whether an app's own browser opened it (Instagram, TikTok or Facebook), and the creator's name or campaign in the link that brought you (readoactive.app/?via=name, or utm_source). Never your email address, your IP address or the browser's full description. Kept 90 days.
- Server logs: the usual IP address, time and page requested, kept briefly to find faults and abuse.
Where it goes
Readoactive runs on a server we rent, and the database lives there, with a nightly backup copy at Neon, a database host. A few features send a little data to other services, and only what that feature needs:
- Google, for sign-in.
- Anthropic (Claude): the caption, transcript and some frames of a video you capture (a post's caption and pictures), to work out which books it mentions; and a book's plot summary from Wikipedia or a series' Fandom wiki, to condense it into a Catch me up recap (nothing about you is sent with it); and for the For you note on a book page, the facts worked out from your ratings (this book's tropes, the titles of books of yours they match), to put them into two sentences, sent without your name or account. Anthropic does not train its models on this.
- Hardcover, Google Books, Open Library, Wikidata and Apple Books: titles, authors and ISBNs, to fetch covers, ratings, series and editions. We also read Wikidata's public lists of prize winners and of films and series based on books.
- Wikipedia: we read the celebrity book clubs' public lists of picks, and books' plot summaries for Catch me up (looked up by title and author); nothing about you is sent.
- Fandom and other fan wikis, other-language Wikipedias: we read the plot summaries on a series' fan wiki (Fandom, Tolkien Gateway and the like) or on another language's Wikipedia for Catch me up (looked up by series name and book title, through Wikidata); nothing about you is sent.
- AI recaps: when no source has a book's story, you can ask Claude for a recap from what it knows of the book. It is marked as written from the model's memory, is not checked against a source, and may be wrong.
- Wikiquote: a book's title and author, to show a few lines from the book on its page (shown with a link back, as its licence asks).
- Brave Search, Tavily or Google Programmable Search (whichever is configured): a book's title and author, only when no catalog has a cover image for it; the image found is copied to our server.
- OverDrive (Libby): a book's title or ISBN and your chosen libraries, to see whether it can be borrowed.
- OpenStreetMap (Nominatim): a rounded position, to turn it into a place name for the events page.
- Amazon (Audible): your Audible library listing, only while your Audible account is connected.
- Bookshop.org and Book Outlet: a title or ISBN, to show where a copy is sold.
- The video's own site (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube): our server fetches the video or post you shared. That site sees our server, not you.
- Resend delivers any email we send you, such as a sign-in code.
- Stripe handles payments for Plus and capture packs on the web. Your card details go to Stripe, never to us; we keep your Stripe customer id and what was bought.
- Google Play handles payments when paid plans exist. We never see card details.
We do not sell your data, show ads, or share what you read with anyone.
What is public
Only what you choose to share. A list or a year-in-books page you create a link for can be opened by anyone who has the link, and goes away when you delete the list or stop sharing it. A review you mark as shown to other readers appears on that book's page under your display name until you untick it. Everything else is visible only to you.
Keeping and deleting
We keep your data for as long as your account exists. You can export all of it at any time from You → Import → Send your books. To delete your account and everything in it, open You → Account → Delete account: it is removed immediately, and from the backup copy at its next nightly run. Or write to dydy.hadoola@gmail.com and we do it for you.
Children
Readoactive is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly keep their data.
Security
Everything travels over HTTPS. The database accepts connections only from the server itself, and no keys or passwords are kept in the app's code.
Changes
If this page changes, the date at the top changes with it, and anything that matters gets a note inside the app.
